The Essential Local Markets for Cooking
December 10, 2018
BY MERKA SERRATO
Cooking for the holidays doesn’t have to be stressful, and Dallas has a slew of adorable local markets to help us out with that! Here are our top picks, and what to pick up for the table, from each!
RUDOLPH’S MEAT MARKET
In the heart of Deep Ellum, Rudolph’s Meat Market instantly takes you back in time when you are greeted by the two friendly men in their crisp, clean and all-white butcher outfits. Both have been there for almost 20 years and know everything there is to know about quality, selection, and cooking. Therefore, they can help guide you through the process of picking exactly what you are looking for.
What stands out to us? The rack of lamb! Contrary to popular belief, lamp is actually quite easy to make. Pop it in the oven with a few leaves of rosemary, butter, garlic, and voila! You have a flavorful star to your entrée.
Also, don’t skip the beef jerky - it is to die for! The pieces are marinated in pepper and have the perfect balance between chewiness and softness. You can really get creative with their jerky because they cut their pieces in nice thick strips that give you room to play with the presentation. I am cutting mine into little cubes and serving them alongside a cheese board, as a holiday appetizer!

Uptown, lover’s lane, Preston-Royal, Plano
An all-time life saver for any meal and any occasion, Eatzi’s has consistently been one of our favorite places for both party favors and to fill our own fridges. This year, they opened a location at Preston and Royal, joining their others on Lover’s and Oak Lawn, and up in Plano.
Whether you are looking to buy a nice bottle of wine or the perfect hostess gift or a side dish to bring to that holiday party you forgot about, you can find everything from their famous oven-baked parmesan cheese crackers to cold quinoa salads to oven-ready seasoned green beans. And if you’re the one hosting the party, they offer whole roasted chickens and turkeys to go with your choice of customizable salads and sides.
Additionally, to make your life even easier, they have a special Holiday Menu complete with roasts, sides, appetizers, sauces, and sweets that will be available from December 20-23rd. Everything can be ordered online!

TJ’S FISH MARKET
Preston-Royal and Oak Lawn
With locations in Preston-Royal and Oak Lawn TJ’s Seafood Market and Restaurant is home to a great selection of fresh seafood! This includes our favorites they sell: King Crab legs. You can seriously taste a hint of salty ocean water in every bite, that’s how fresh! They are a life saver that will be ready to enjoy without you even needing to boil anything! They are sold frozen, fully cooked, but still in their shell, which makes their presentation particularly fancy. Pro tip: they sell the sweetest lemons and clarified butter that make it a one stop shop for everything you need to serve your Alaskan King Crab Legs.
Of course they also have buttery-sushi-grade salmon, scallops, mussels, and rotate their selection of white fish almost every day. Whether you are looking for the perfect Sea Bass, or a Halibut, TJ’s Seafood Market will have a fresh fish that won’t disappoint. However, per one of our family traditions growing up, we love having cracked crab to enjoy on New Year’s Eve!
