More parks over Downtown freeways?! It looks like Klyde Warren Park is setting the standard for ways that highways around Dallas can reconnect neighborhoods that “were separated years ago by construction of the original freeways,” per the city council memo.

DECK PARKS OVER I-30
Earlier this fall, the city council approved a deck park over I-30 on Lamar Street between S. Ervay St. and Harwood Street, near Old City Park in the Cedars. The city looks forward to “stitching” back together the Downtown Dallas area with the Cedars neighborhood.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT?
The project hopes to open the southern part of the Cedars to tourism. “The connectivity is going to be huge. It’s a big win for all of Dallas when we connect the south and south ends of our city because that takes economic development that way,” per Dallas City Council member Omar Narvaez.
FUNDING AND TIMELINE
A total of $42M was approved by city council for the deck park projects, but no timeline was given for when we could expect this to come to fruition.
SOUTHERN GATEWAY
This isn’t the first park-over-highway project post-Klyde Warren Park. The Southern Gateway in Oak Cliff is already under construction across I-35E between Ewing and Marsalis Avenue, spanning five acres and aiming to “reconnect historic Oak Cliff.”
