If you love sushi, this is a good year for you as we’ve seen so many great Japanese restaurants open, and it all culminates with one we’ve been waiting anxiously for…Kaiyo!

Updated December 2023

KAIYO

From Chef Jimmy Park of Shoyo comes his newest spot just down Greenville, in the former Teppo space. William Yoon, whom Jimmy brought over from Shoyo, heads the restaurant and delivers amazing and inventive creations in a fun and upbeat atmosphere. And yes that means the 90’s hip hop music from Shoyo carries over!

Kaiyo

THE SPACE

As owner Jimmy Park put it in a Dallas News article, the restaurant “is a vibe.” A small but energetic space, you can feel the lively atmosphere when you walk in. Choose the bar overlooking the sushi chefs carefully preparing sashimi plates, or tables along the colorful mural designed by Brooklyn muralist Yukiko Izumi, which evokes Hokusai inspiration.

ORDER THE NIGIRI!

The “chef’s special” nigiri plate is a must! William prepares six mouthwatering, high-quality pieces of nigiri with perfectly paired garnishes, reminding us of the artfully delicious bites you can expect at Shoyo’s omakase.

OTHER ITEMS TO TRY

🐟 There are a few different sashimi plates, but the yellowtail comes with a fun surprise!

🍣  Any individual nigiri bites - we could have eaten a dozen of the scallops and the tuna

🍤 The rock shrimp, a menu item of Jimmy’s we’ve been loving since he was at Nori in Deep Ellum

VISITING

Kaiyo serves dinner Tuesday through Friday and opens beginning at noon on Saturdays. Reservations are only available for parties of 7 or 8 people, so otherwise, you will have to wait, but you can always order a drink at their bar or go somewhere in the neighborhood in the meantime!
